Windmills have been around for a long time for things like pumping water from a well and grinding grains. The windmill simply takes advantage of the wind that is generated by the sun heating the surface of the earth unevenly. There are hot and cooler spots that form on the earth and at the hot spots the air moves up and the cooler air fills in behind it causing wind.
Windmills are designed to take advantage of the wind by it’s ability to rotate or turn the blades of the windmill which cause a drive shaft to turn. To take advantage of the windmills ability to make electricity, the drive shaft will turn a generator to produce the electricity.
Two different kinds of windmills you may find are the Horizontal Axis Turbine and the Vertical Axis Turbine. The most common type are the horizontal axis turbine, these are the ones you see on ranches in the movies and what you see in Holland.
The only drawback to using a windmill is that you need wind to operate it, so when the wind is not cooperating you must have a backup source of electricity. This could be in the form of solar power or you may still be connected to the power grid.
The wind turbines as they are called are getting much more proficient at producing electricity and the price has been going down also. If you consider yourself a handyman you can build yourself a windmill for less than buying a ready-made one. Plans are easy to find and parts are not difficult to get.
